Recently, PRG had the privilege of attending the BBGE SHELT meeting. This gathering brought together leaders in ground engineering to discuss critical topics and initiatives aimed at improving safety, quality, and environmental responsibility across the sector. Here’s an overview of the key topics covered and our reflections on how each contributes to the industry’s advancement.
Key Topics Discussed
- Health & Safety Strategy
Led by Kathy Gilson, this session covered strategic approaches to elevating health and safety standards. A strong safety strategy is essential for protecting workers and ensuring project continuity. - Site Assist Delivery Permit
Presented by Tom Howard, the Site Assist Delivery Permit aims to formalise site delivery procedures on-site. SiteAssist is a platform that offers smart permits, mobilisation, checklists, and registers to improve safety and efficiency in high risk industries - Quality Control
Andrew French discussed methods to maintain high-quality standards across projects, highlighting the need for consistency and rigorous quality management to meet industry expectations. - Carbon Reduction Plan & Syntech
Lauren Maple Paddock shared insights on reducing carbon footprints within the industry and adopting eco-friendly technologies through Syntech. Syntech is the most sustainable biofuel available in the UK due to the incredibly low carbon footprint of its feedstocks which are 100% used cooking oils from the UK. - SB3 & Risk Management
Vincent Leblois provided an overview of SB3 and its project risks. Proactive risk management is essential for minimising disruptions and ensuring project success. - Ground Engineering (GE) Opportunities
Rob Cannon explored emerging opportunities within BBGE, showing the wide range of exciting opportunities BBGE are working on. - Challenges with Supply Chain
Mark Edwards and Fred Hubert discussed ongoing supply chain challenges. And the need to address these issues to maintain project timelines and controlling costs. - Tarmac Ride-Along & Initiatives
Damon Holmes introduced Tarmac’s ride-along initiative, which by riding with a driver fosters better collaboration and understanding among project stakeholders through direct, on-site experience. - HAVS & Welding Fumes Management
Finbarr Lynch covered health risks related to HAVS and welding fumes, stressing the importance of protecting employees from long-term occupational health hazards. - Working at Height
Presented by Anna McHale and Steve Hoskisson, this session focused on how Balfour Beatty have improved safety practices for working at height, one of the most hazardous aspects of construction. Access and egress solutions were discussed to minimise risks on site.
How This Relates to PRG
